Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise's Tropic Thunder 'offensive to the disabled'
Dozens of demonstrators from organisations including the Special Olympics and the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) waved placards outside the cinema in Los Angeles as the actors walked down the red carpet.
Stiller plays an actor who has the title role in a film called Simple Jack, which carries the tagline: "Once upon a time... there was a retard."
The intention is to spoof Hollywood actors who believe playing a disabled character will guarantee them an Oscar nod. But the joke has backfired.
"We fell that the use of the word 'retard' throughout the film, 15 or more times, is done without any regard for the dignity of people with intellectual disabilities. The caricatures of people with intellectual disabilities are almost hateful, and we want this to be the beginning of the end. We want this to be the end of Hollywood treating this population as the butt of jokes," said Tim Shriver, chairman of the Special Olympics disability group. [Telegraph]

American actress Katie Holmes has further fuelled rumours that she is heading to Broadway, after being spotted with her hubby Tom Cruise at a theatre in New York recently.
The two were seen attending 'The Country Girl' at the Bernard B Jacobs Theatre after dining with Jerry Seinfeld's wife Jessica in the Big Apple, reports Contactmusic. According to the rumours, Holmes has been linked to do a starring role in family drama 'All My Sons'. [One India]

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are reportedly in dispute over how to celebrate daughter Suri's second birthday, according to the National Enquirer.
Cruise is allegedly planning to spend $500,000 on a lavish birthday party but Holmes believes it may be too extravagant.
"Tom is out to make Suri’s second birthday a spectacle like no other child has ever had," a source is quoted as saying. [China Daily]
