Curse of Scarlett Johansson fervour

IN the profit and loss columns of contemporary celebrity, what goes where is a question we could probably all make a fair stab at answering.

Take the case of Scarlett Johansson.

Profit? Easy. The list would include the following: the $US7 million ($7.3 million) Los Angeles home she purchased last year with her huge film earnings; her status as Hollywood royalty and funky indie-film darling; the fact directors such as Woody Allen and Sofia Coppola beat a path to her agent; and her 2006 coronation by a US magazine as "the sexiest woman alive".

And loss? Easy again, albeit tainted for many by a get-over-it, call-those-problems sneer. Into that column would go the privacy the 23-year-old has sacrificed and that she guards fiercely. In, too, the poison she is powerless to prevent people spreading about her: that Tom Cruise allegedly tried to recruit her to Scientology in an audition; that she and actor Benicio del Toro had sex in a hotel lift following the 2004 Oscars; that she has slept her way to success. Johansson & Reynolds set to tie the knot

Actress Scarlett Johansson and actor Ryan Reynolds have announced their engagement after dating for a year.

According to People magazine, Johansson's representative Marcel Pariseau said: "They're both thrilled."

The report says that the 31-year-old actor proposed to 23-year-old Johansson recently but the couple's wedding date has not yet been announced. [RTE]

'Boleyn' girls Portman, Johansson share a sisterhood thing

Portman and Johansson had known each other casually before shooting Boleyn, their first on-screen collaboration. Portman had signed on first and expressed her desire to engage in a little sibling rivalry with Johansson.

"We had some mutual friends," Johansson says. "I've always been a fan. Her choices, the work that she has done — it's true. I've always been a huge fan, but I never assumed there would be an opportunity where we could work together in such an intimate way. And then I heard she wanted me to do it."

These were snapped @ the 58th Berlinale Film Festival in Berlin

Here's a brief plot summary of the flick...

The story opens in 1521 when Mary's distant cousin, the Duke of Buckingham, is executed on the king's orders. His crime was daring to suggest that Henry could not produce a healthy son. A year later, Mary's older sister, Anne, returns from the French Court where she has lived as a lady-in-waiting for the last few years. Both the Boleyn girls are remarkable beauties, and Mary (despite being only thirteen years old) is already married to the wealthy courtier, Sir William Carey. Mary's life is turned upside down, however, when the 31-year-old King Henry VIII takes an interest in her. Despite being a favourite lady-in-waiting to his wife, Queen Katherine, Mary yields to her family's pressure and reluctantly becomes the king's mistress. She is assisted in this process by her two siblings - the quick-witted George and the scheming Anne. To her father's delight, Mary becomes pregnant with the king's child. She gives birth to two children - Catherine and Henry. However, while she is pregnant, Anne sets out to seduce the king and steal him away from her sister. She is successful, and the King flirts with Anne by day and sleeps with Mary by night. In the process he breaks Mary's heart, who has by now fallen in love with him. [Wiki]

Recently rumors were flying around that Scarlett prematurely swallowed the career-suicide pill & got engaged to Ryan Reynolds. Well, both parties have since denied the rumors and Scartlett's career is safe...for now.

How's that for useless news? At least it's better than the Kelly Rowland's smelly sandwich story...
