They're Russian and their management decided the lesbian image was a good way to provoke interest in them. There was a huge backlash about it coz at the time they were like 16 or something and I think the general consensis was that it was wrong to 'exploit' them like that. And yeah, they did fess up that it was all an act.

It reminds me of that ad on TV where the girls are fighting and then the one gets pinned against a chain link fence and then they kiss. It is almost exactly like the tatu video.. I wouldn't be surprised if that's where they got the idea.
