Shakira is gorgeous! Everything about her is just her, she's not plastic and she's not ugly. She has incredible talent when it comes to dancing, however, over the years she's growing more addicted to the drug known as fame. When she first started out she a)didn't know how to dance to much, b) didn't care what people thought of her hair or her clothes ect... c) was loyal to the people and put her fans first. But now she only cares about her American audience. She claims that she is for her people but in reality she'll schedule concerts all over the place but then cancel some of them last minute in order to perform somewhere in America where she'll get muchmore money for it. As for her voice, it was really good at first and it still is I believe, but she tries to hard to keep up the image America has created for her that she is this belly dancing sexymoving goddess, and as a result her singing has been put in third place. Money, Image, Singing, country. Now I'm not saying that she has not achieved a lot because she has and I'm not saying that she is not proud of her country because she is, there's nothing better than being Colombian, but if she toned down her moves a bit and brought it all back to her music, she'd be a sensation. If you ever see her in concert you'll see that the songs she sings from before her English album Laundry Service came out are the ones that have true soul and beauty in them. She is not trying to seduce her audience with her body and she's not writhing on the floor either. She's simply singing and the voice that comes out is beautiful because it's not being blocked by her trying to dance more than she can while singing. The dance moves are good but if she would put them in between words, then it would all come together and there wouldn't be a problem.
Shakira needs to come back to the people, take the fame down a notch, and stop trying to please everyone in America. Shakira, in my humble opinion, has done well for herself in the mainstream music community. However, a majority of her fans fail to realize the techniques she uses in her overall musical execution. Her song-writing ability is very lacking, very limited. She's not very versatile as a musician (and would therefore most likely never achieve the status of a virtuoso) She does however have a very distinct sound, which appealed to the label the currently has her signed (Epic Records)

For those of you who aren't too sure about how it works, her label funds her with a budget. Depending on how major the label is, you'll receive more money to produce your album. Shakira more than likely knows little to nothing about the audio engineering world, and therefore focuses on her composition, and IMAGE above all else. But the truth is, it's the great audio engineers she has working for her, that have years and years of experience, working with equalizers, compressors, normalizers, and all of the other tools required during the recording, mixing, and eventually mastering process. These technicians are who really pull out the full sound in Shakira's music, and make her as popular as she is in the mainstream world.

So overall, I think Shakira's definitely talented, but only to a certain extent. She's got a well-balanced idea of presenting her music and image, but for those of you that have said that "she's VERY dedicated to her work" and that "she knows WAY MORE about what she's doing than other 'artists' " should really refrain from using those comments, unless you REALLY know what you're talking about...

@ Primal Light: you're an audio engineering apprentice aren't you? You've learned the basics, so you talk the shit, bragging around some miserable website, aight? Well, I've crossed the people who have worked with Shakira HERSELF in the studio, for days and days, and even months of recording sessions, and they have extremely positive opinion of her musical/composing/singing abilities. Engineer who has worked with her raw live recordings said she "can sing the shit out of a song" (meaning she can sing awesome), and it was not some official interview, but a rather intimate conversation! No f*** way bunch of audio engineers can produce such cool music without good work in composition/interpretation department, which is, despite everything, Shakira's credit for the most part. She has collaborators who help her out, and she often rips other artists off, but she still does a great job. And how come collaborators change and the quality of music remains? How come she made great songs back in the days she had no big budget? And how come shes so great live?

So, to wrap this up, Shakira's no audio engineering product, and even the singers (like Rihanna or Britney) who mostly are, are very talented as well! You yourself admit she has a distinct sound and focuses on composition (what on Earth could be more important than that!, hi-fi production/engineering certainly cant!). She's quite awesome. As a composer shes not a virtuoso, but is very versatile!

That said, ill readily say that her talent and fame are blown way out of proportion and that there are musicians who deserve far more attention and recognition than she gets. Pop culture is not about purely artistic qualities though. Shakira is quite a careerist as well, unfortunately, and a sell out, but she's also way more gifted artist than her detractors would ever admit. So, although i partly agree with you, im sure she deserves more recognition than she gets (but then again its partly her fault as well).
