TV review: 'Picture' a generic fairy taleThere's nothing really wrong with the good, clean fun of "Picture This!" unless you sit back and consider the collective message that films of this ilk try to communicate. You can watch them and think, well, that's nice that even the ugliest of ducklings can really become an A-lister if he or she puts his or her mind to it. But, more realistically, do you have to be the most popular, the most talented or the best looking? For that matter, what's so hot about being a swan in the first place?
Films like "Picture This!" may seem to be endorsing the notion that kids should be true to themselves, but why is it that the inevitable happy ending always finds the heroine dancing at the school prom with Prince Charming? How about a film where kids don't have to get contact lenses, total makeovers, win the school talent contest or big game, and land the hottest guy/girl at school to find themselves? How about a film that says, you know, there's nothing wrong with being a duckling? SF Gate
