"There are other factors"? The rest of the team wasn't perfect, but I didn't see anyone else fall off the beam (giving her a score .975 lower than any other American or Chinese gymnast) and fall flat on their ass during the floor exercise (minus .8 points for that alone)...

I have no doubts at least one of those girls still had baby teeth and I'm not suprised. Even if they weren't underage, her age would still be a factor: she's in her 20s, so she's ancient for a gymnast. The only advantage her age gave her was her muscularity, which helped for the vault.
Her fall off the beam was a choke moment--that was one of the easiest elements in her routine and, if the commentator was correct, one of the easiest beam elements period. She also fell the same way she did in the floor exercise in her warm-up/practice right before it: she was scared of going out of bounds. A .10 of a point deduction for stepping out is better than risking a .80 or more hit falling on your ass because you're trying to pull up short. As a captain and being experienced as she is, she should know better.
The way they did the U.S. rotation was effed up, but I'm sure that's not the first time it's happened to her in her career. The whole country went "Goddamnit!" because she blew the only opportunity China was going to give them damn near single-handedly and blaming it on "other factors" is an attempt to save face.

Alicia's two big mistakes were 1.60 in deductions and the US lost by about 2.30. So while she did account for most of the deficit, she can't take on all of the blame. Erase the one fall by a Chinese competitor and the margin widens. The Chinese were doing harder routines with higher starting scores and executing them for the most part, so they would have had to screw up majorly more frequently for the US to have a chance a gold -- that's not a strategy with a high probability of working. They at least got silver by a wide margin.
Anyway, I just enjoy watching the acrobatic performances. I don't give much weight to who wins and loses in sports where scores rely on subjective judging vs some real tangible measuring (scoring more goals, having a faster time, throwing a longer distance, etc).
Oh and it was nice to see a woman athlete with a decent rack out there for a change.

The chinese team trainer has it right. If you americans acuse the Chinese girls of being under age without proof, just by their looks, then it is fair to acuse yhe US team of being on anabolyc steroids. How come are they all so muscular? There was not one team in gymnastics that looked as ridiculously buff as the US american team.
Gymnastics does not naturally build up a body like that. remember we are talking about ladies between 16 and 20 years old.

You do make a good point. And it's not just the fact that they're ladies between 16 and 20 years old, it's the fact that they're ladies. Women don't naturally have the required amount of testosterone to develop muscles like that. Nor are all those muscles necessary as was shown by the Chinese team.

Frist I would like to get to know Alica Sacramone.
